Dear Parent(s),

We hope that the first couple of weeks have been fun and exciting for both you and your child!

Coming Up Next week:

Writing: This week the students read the book, “Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born” by Jamie Lee Curtis. The students are now excited to write their own personal narratives about the day they joined their family. This weekend the students will be coming home with interview questions for you to answer about the day they joined the family. We ask that you help them answer these questions (and write down the answers if needed) so that they can bring the information back to school and they can then start writing their own special personal narratives. These interview questions are due Wednesday, September 1st.

Language Arts: We will be starting Unit 1 Week 3 in our Treasures program which includes non-fiction stories. In spelling the students will study words with the short and long /a/ vowel sound. Please look at the homework website for the spelling words. As a reminder all spelling tests will be taken on Thursdays. The students will have their spelling tests in their Friday folders for you to review and they will receive their new spelling words for the week on Fridays. You will be able to find these words in their planners and on the ACS homework website listed under your child’s teacher’s name. The vocabulary words for the week will include flames, forest, heat, safe, and tell. We will be learning about the subject and predicate of a sentence in grammar.

Math: We will continue our Saxon math program with lesson 10 this week. Some students will switch for math classes. The first few weeks should be review for most of the students. If you are noticing that the work is too difficult, please let us know. If you would like to practice some concepts at home, the first few weeks will include addition facts, time, patterning, and calendar. You can find your child’s homework listed for the night in their planners or on the ACS website.

Social Studies: The students had a wonderful time reciting the Preamble to the Constitution and reciting their lines about the Constitutional Convention. The classroom constitutions will be up in the classrooms so you may see them if you were unable to attend. They are amazing! Next week, we will start Maps and Globes. Our culminating activity will be to create a geographical feature project. More information about this project will be given out on testing day. We will also send information via email and have it on the website on Monday as well. This project will be due Friday, September 10th.

Science: The students were so excited to start the unit on “Balance and Motion.” They have learned how to balance a crayfish, a triangle, and an arch using counterweights (or clothespins). Hopefully they have been able to bring their crayfish home to show you this amazing trick!!
